The research investigates the relationship between urban scale 3D modeling and urban design focusing on "Town Docks" in Ravenna. The "Town Docks" is the oldest part of the port of Ravenna, in direct contact with the edge of the historical center. This is a great area that historically developed according to the functions of port activities, characterized by large industrial warehouses, industrial plants, and some "intrusions" of housing, now historicized. The close proximity to Old Town led to dismiss industrial activities and the PRG (master plan) of 1995 changed the industrial area vocation with a specific Regeneration Plan, which was implemented only in part due to the complexity of the area, and was substantially evolved to the current planning solution. The issue of recovery and regeneration of an important city part, which is neither historical nor contemporary, leads to complex questions about urban planning and tools used to drive and verify the design solutions. CT lab, research laboratory on building innovation, along with drawing courses of the second year at the Engineering Faculty of Ravenna, investigated the role of urban scale 3D models as a tool to know and interpret the environment (recognition and representation of qualitative phenomena that characterize the city and determine the identity). The research also pointed out how 3d models can be a functional tool in formulating and reviewing the planning proposals. The entire area 3D models made it possible to reference the analysis data and to interactively visualize the critical issues and design simulations. The comparison of the various projects has shown their weak points, highlighting the importance of modeling both as a tool of feedback in the design process and as an aid to the recent procedures of VAS (SEA - Strategic Environmental Assessment). The research may lead to the development of guidelines for prior assessment of the effects of design through 3D simulation.
