The check list of the fauna of Emilia Romagna listed 4144 species of which 682 were vertebrates and 3462 invertebrates. It is important to highlight that the invertebrate fauna list was not at all complete and the estimated real overall number of species is up to 16,000. Thus invertebrates constituted 96 % of the fauna. The mollusc list has a much lower degree of uncertainty and accounts for 166 species (4% of the check list and 1% of the estimated fauna).
