This short article explores some hidden sources of the German colonial period in East Africa, the German maps. This is an extremely rich documentary source composed by 1,450 maps originated by the German authorities in Tanzania. Included in the catalogue of the National Archives of Tanzania, and for a long time not used by historians, the maps have been discovered by the author in the East Africana Collection, University of Dar es Salaam. The article gives information on how to have access and use this precious source for the study of the German colonial period.
