BACKGROUND Patients with cirrhosis and gastrointestinal hemorrhage frequently suffer bacterial infections, and antibiotics are used for prophylaxis. Norfloxacin is the standard prophylactic treatment but, since quinolone-resistant bac terial strains have emerged, its efficacy has been reduced. OBJECTIVES To evaluate and compare oral norfloxacin with intravenous ceftriaxone for the prophylaxis of bacterial infections in patients with cirrhosis and gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
