This paper summarizes what we know from economic theory and empirical evidence about the way people allocate their time, and how such allocation responds to fiscal policy, institutions, social forces, and technological progress. An important development in this literature is the availability of detailed time-use data, which allow social scientists to go beyond the traditional work-“leisure” dichotomy. My goal is not to provide a comprehensive survey of an old and vast literature but to briefly discuss key ideas and indicate some open issues for future research and policy analysis. Both microeconomic and macroeconomic aspects are considered.

Abstract: | This paper summarizes what we know from economic theory and empirical evidence about the way people allocate their time, and how such allocation responds to fiscal policy, institutions, social forces, and technological progress. |
