Abstract

The use and adoption of magnesium extruded profiles in structural applications is limited because magnesium extrusion technology is at its conception. Once extruded hollow sections are available at a reasonable cost, a tremendous increase of market demand is expected due to the low weight of magnesium alloys in comparison with aluminum based ones. The press productivity represents a key factor in this scope. Also the die, due to the strong influence of strain and temperature on extrudability, will play a basic role in achieving the required ram speed. This paper present a new approach for designing extrusion dies specifically for magnesium alloys AZ31 and ZM21 by means of FEM simulation. The effectiveness of the new design has been validated by extruding a hollow profile using an industrial press with data logging.
