It was analysed whether individuals vary language abstraction to simultaneously achieve the main relational goals of romantic rapports – to initiate, maintain and break up – and the communicative goals of the specific conversation – to disclose thoughts or to convince the recipient. Results revealed that abstract language was used to disclose the intention of initiating a romantic rapport or ending a problematic one, as well as to convince the partner to maintain a consolidated relationship or to continue a relationship which is in crisis. Concrete language was preferred when speakers disclosed their intention to maintain a long-term relationship or to continue an unsatisfying one, as well as when they wanted to convince the other person to initiate a relationship or to end a difficult rapport.

Abstract
It was analysed whether individuals vary language abstraction to simultaneously achieve the main relational goals of romantic rapports – to initiate, maintain and break up – and the communicative goals of the specific conversation – to disclose thoughts or to convince the recipient. Results revealed that abstract language was used to disclose the intention of initiating a romantic rapport or ending a problematic one, as well as to convince the partner to maintain a consolidated relationship or to continue a relationship which is in crisis. Concrete language was preferred when speakers disclosed their intention to maintain a long-term relationship or to continue an unsatisfying one, as well as when they wanted to convince the other person to initiate a relationship or to end a difficult rapport.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
