Kolsterising® (Kolsterising® is a registered trademark of Bodycote S3P - Specialty stainless steel Processes) is a carbon diffusion hardening process, used primarily for austenitic and duplex stainless steels, that results in an interstitial solid solution of carbon atoms in austenite, without the formation of chromium carbides. In principle, any austenitic stainless steel can be Kolsterised. However, the preferred type of steel contains molybdenum and is ferrite free, since this results in greatly increased resistance to pitting, crevice, and stress corrosion. Kolsterising® of precipitation hardening stainless steels and nickel base alloys is also possible.
