This paper investigates Italian student performances based on the 2009 edition of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a survey conducted by OECD in order to assess skills of 15-year-olds in schools with respect to reading, mathematical and scientific literacy. In particular, student outcomes are compared among different Italian regions, taking into account socio-economic background and school membership of students. The results show that, despite the existence of a unified educational system in Italy, regional differences are evident. However, taking the nested structure of data into account, it can be shown that the most part of the variability in student performances can be explained by differences at school level.

Abstract
