The paper describes critically the state of the art in the field of mafia research, especially focusing on sociology and criminology. It reconstructs briefly the history of mafia research since the unification and shed light on the political implications of this research. In the second section the paper introduces a Symposium on Mafia and reflexivity, edited by the author. In this section the research on mafia is understood as a cultural object in itself, and is advanced a call for a more reflexive understanding of mafia studies as an epistemologically strategic endeavor in both the social sciences and political life.
