CXCL10 has several roles including regulation of conceptus adhesion during the implantation period. The aim of this work was to study the variability of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 10 (CXCL10) gene of different pig breeds and to perform an association study between the analyzed SNP and prolificacy in Italian Large White (ITLW) sows. We genotyped a total of 793 samples of ITLW, Italian Landrace (ITLA), Italian Duroc (ITDU) and Pietrain (PI) pigs. Minor allele frequencies were <0.02 in ITDU and PI and 0.07 and 0.19 in ITLA and ITLW, respectively. The SNP of CXCL10 gene was associated with estimated breeding values for the number of piglets born alive at first litter (P= 0.0021) in ITLW.
