This paper presents the main characteristics of the structural system of the new headquarters of the “Calabria” Region. It is a group of 7 building with a steel structure and an overall surface of about 60,000 square meters. The buildings have a number of stories between 10 and 12. One of the main structural challenges was posed by the design of the bracing system for wind loads (winds in the area are so strong that a number of wind turbines are planned nearby). Another challenge was posed by the seismic design of the structure. This challenge being mainly related to the number of code requirements which seems to be tailored with reference to building structure much smaller and simpler than the case at hand. In detail, in order to satisfy the specific (and conflicting) requirements imposed by the code upon the stiffness and strength of the bracing system a special “nl-link” which acts axially (instead of the common bending behavior) was developed.
