Dissipative systems have widely proven their effectiveness in mitigating seismic effects in structures, as they are easily applicable and they reduce the kinetic energy transferred by earthquakes to structures. Still the issue is open in terms of identifying the additional damper system that maximizes the overall dissipative properties of the structure under a wide range of dynamic inputs and with reference to a number of performance indexes. The research here presented starts from the results of the latest studies about the optimal dampers placement inside structures, to identify an innovative damping system composed by hysterethic dampers. The analysis concern the structural dynamic assessment of an existing structure (Corpo D of Ospedale Maggiore in Bologna, Italy), composed of a central non moment-resisting steel frame characterized by a small horizontal stiffness, which supports essentially the vertical actions, and two external lateral-resisting elements of reinforced concrete (concrete cores) which mainly support the horizontal loads. The corresponding storeys of the two portions of the building (i.e. the frame structure and the lateral-resisting elements) are linked with appropriate metallic sinusoidal elements, whose non linear behavior is here analyzed.
