the paper deals with description of a continuous monitoring scheme implemented in a sandy aquifer complex recharged by the Po river in low Padana plain near Ferrara (Italy). The aquifer actually is formed by two distinct sandy lithosomes: Holocenic paleo-channels (shallow unconfined aquifer) and Upper Pleistocenic sands (confined aquifer). The lithosomes are separated by a clayey aquitard but locally they become amalgamated and make very interesting the chance to exploit Po recharged via paleo-channels sand-pit lakes waters. The monitoring scheme, based on piezometer heads, Po and lake stage and rainfall recording has the aim to study the lateral recharge process and to make the base for a numerical model to evaluate the potential of induced recharge of the system. The data show how linked to distinct events is the recharge process and give an insight on the rate of flood wave pressure transfert trough the aquifer. Only big events seem to contribute in an effective way to lateral recharge trough paleo-channels; for the rest of the year regional recharge trough the confined aquifer prevail.

Abstract

the paper deals with description of a continuous monitoring scheme implemented in a sandy aquifer complex recharged by the Po river in low Padana plain near Ferrara (Italy).
