The bacterium Cupriavidus necator DSM 428 was cultivated in mineral medium supplemented with used vegetable frying oils as the sole carbon source. Oils with different composition were used in order to assess their impact on polymer’s production, composition and properties. Kinetics of specific fatty acids uptake were also evaluated in order to determine the microorganism’s preference for growth and PHA production. A full molecular characterization of the obtained PHAs together with measurements of their thermal and structural properties were performed. Future experiments will be done in order to fully optimize the PHA production process and correlate the obtained polymer characteristics with the composition of the waste oil used.
