The historical maps used in this study are the ones made by many land surveyors, collected in different archives (Opere Pie dei Poveri e Vergognosi, Archivio di Stato, Biblioteca dell’Archiginnasio) called “cabrei”. Maps were digitally acquired, georeferenced and digitized (creating different layers for urban settlements, rivers, swamps and roads and a database reporting the most important information) using the ArcGis software, in order to compare them with aerial and satellite images. The aim of this research is to help the territorial and the urban planning using information gathered from historical maps of the Bologna plain. Knowing the hydraulic history of our region is the key to guide the planning. Nevertheless, this information make it possible to understand the evolution and the meaning of toponyms, the territorial current distribution of the former agricultural layouts, the evolution of urban centres.
