The review considers the book by Helga Ramsey Kurtz, The Non-Literate Other. Readings of Illiteracy in the 20th Century Novels, highlighting the focus on certain characters in postcolonial fiction who have not been given a voice, who are illiterate and contribute to the process of othering. Examples are to be found in J.M. Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians or David Malouf's An Imaginary Life.
