The paper deals with some unpublished materials (geological sections, a model for didactic purposes) by Giuseppe Scarabelli (1820-1905), focused on the Gessoso-solfifera Fm (Messinian Age), made up of Gypsum and Sulfur, whose outcrops are well exposed in the Emilia-Romagna lower Apennines and now acknowledged as UNESCO World Heritage. These materials allow an insight on Scarabelli’s methodology, and confirm his role as one of the pioneers in the history of studies of Gypsum and Sulfur at the world level.
