The category of imaginary has been quite neglected from Semiotics. On the contrary, also on the basis of some recent philosophical studies (Wunenburger's and Žižek's theories), we would argue that it can be very useful for a better comprehension of some cultural mechanisms: negotiation, memory processes, creation of stereotypes, according to a theory of culture whose first reference is Juri Lotman.
