The ‘human factor’ – demographic, social, and psychological forces at both individual and group levels – has long been a critical, if often intangible, element in Strategic Studies, shaping decision-making, military effectiveness, and war-making. Russian strategic thinkers have also acknowledged this debate, albeit without developing a dedicated, coherent body of work. Instead, references to the ‘human factor’ are often sparse and ancillary, embedded within discussions on broader topics. This contribution enquires into that by asking: how is the HF reflected in Russian military-strategic debates? How is it operationalised by Russian thinkers? In what ways do demographic, social, and psychological forces shape the Russian strategic assessments? Can we identify connections between these doctrinal discussions and Russia’s actual confrontation strategies?
