This work experimentally and numerically investigates the evaporation process of fuel-wetted porous media under external heat radiation. Evaporation tests were performed using n-heptane and quartz sand in a heating cone. The results show that the evolution of the mass consumption rate significantly depends on the initial fuel level, and filtration combustion could happen if the liquid fuel is buried deep inside the sand layer. A numerical model was proposed to simulate the heat and mass transfer processes inside the porous media and explain the occurrence of filtration combustion, which was validated by the experimental data.

Abstract
This work experimentally and numerically investigates the evaporation process of fuel-wetted porous media under external heat radiation. Evaporation tests were performed using n-heptane and quartz sand in a heating cone. The results show that the evolution of the mass consumption rate significantly depends on the initial fuel level, and filtration combustion could happen if the liquid fuel is buried deep inside the sand layer. A numerical model was proposed to simulate the heat and mass transfer processes inside the porous media and explain the occurrence of filtration combustion, which was validated by the experimental data.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
