This paper presents an analysis of a figured composite marble capital, discovered in the Vigles-Mavropapa area of Gortyn (Crete). Through a detailed examination of its technical, stylistic, and iconographic features, the study proposes a date in the 3rd c. AD and discusses its possible original provenance from a monumental building in the city, such as the Praetorium Temple B or the Great Theatre on the slopes of the acropolis. The capital is further examined in the context of Late Antique reuse processes, which may explain its presence in the area of the Mavropapa basilica. The article thus offers new perspectives on the chronology of Temple B, on the reuse of architectural material from large, abandoned monuments of the imperial age, and on the symbolic role of architecture in the civic identity of Late Antique Gortyn.

Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of a figured composite marble capital, discovered in the Vigles-Mavropapa area of Gortyn (Crete). Through a detailed examination of its technical, stylistic, and iconographic features, the study proposes a date in the 3rd c. AD and discusses its possible original provenance from a monumental building in the city, such as the Praetorium Temple B or the Great Theatre on the slopes of the acropolis. The capital is further examined in the context of Late Antique reuse processes, which may explain its presence in the area of the Mavropapa basilica. The article thus offers new perspectives on the chronology of Temple B, on the reuse of architectural material from large, abandoned monuments of the imperial age, and on the symbolic role of architecture in the civic identity of Late Antique Gortyn.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
