Strabo’s passage of Geography XV, 3.13-15 is a reliable account on the Mazdean ritual practices, combining previous ethnographical records (Herodotus) on Persian religious customs with later reports, and with his own study of Cappadocian shrines, dedicated to the Mazdean fire cults. Old and new scholarship on Strabo and cultural history of Asia Minor, combining the study of epigraphical data of ancient Anatolia with that of Zoroastrian texts, confirms the importance of this author; this is also true of his description of the role of religious temples (to Anaitis and Omanos), probably in connection with the development of narratives concerning divinations and prophecies within the Hellenistic-Roman period.
