What are the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES)’s primary financial sources of income? How does the DAANES allocate its annual budget to different areas, groups, and issues? Despite not being recognised by the Syrian government, before and after the fall of Assad, the DAANES administers roughly 25 per cent of the Syrian territory, with a complex top-down and bottom-up governance system. The article, which combines primary and secondary sources, aims to unravel the main sources of income of the DAANES, shedding light on how rebel coalitions collect and administer financial budgets during civil wars.
