THE TOTALITARIAN PARADIGM OF ITALIAN FASCISM: BETWEEN EXHAUSTIVE TOTALITY AND QUESTIONABLE IMPERFECTION

he applicability of the concept of totalitarianism to twentieth-century regimes has been one of the most challenging interpretations for the social sciences. From a historiographical perspective, the issue highlights the age-old difficulty in establishing an ideal type capable of encompassing geographically distant forms and manifestations, while from a legal and political science perspective, it reveals the modern arbitrariness concealed behind the use of the noun «totalitarianism». In such a fragmented interpretative landscape, the fascist experience has taken on the features of a spurious phenomenology, characterized, even in the exercise of legislative power, by a never fully accomplished totalitarian metamorphosis. This contribution aims to determine, net of the most accredited theories on the subject, the asymmetries present in Italian fascism, stimulating reflection on the inherent relationship between the general category of totalitarianism and the historical experience of fascism.

l’applicabilità del concetto di totalitarismo ai regimi novecenteschi ha rappresentato una delle sfide interpretative più estenuanti per le scienze sociali. Se da una prospettiva storiografica il tema circoscrive l’atavica difficoltà nella statuizione di un idealtipo in grado di contenere forme e manifestazioni geograficamente distanti, la dimensione giuridico-politologica racconta la moderna arbitrarietà celata dietro l’utilizzo del sostantivo «totalitarismo». In un panorama interpretativo così frastagliato, l’esperienza fascista ha assunto le fattezze di una fenomenologia spuria, contraddistintasi, anche nell’esercizio della potestà legislativa, da un mai pieno compimento della propria metamorfosi totalitaria. Il contributo mira a determinare, al netto delle più accreditate teorie in materia, le asimmetrie presenti nel fascismo italico, stimolando una riflessione sul rapporto insito tra la categoria generale del totalitarismo e l’esperienza storica fascista.
