Perception as Familiarization. A Reconstruction of Dewey’s Notes and Outlines for the Carus Lectures

This article offers a reading of the 1922 Notes and Outlines Dewey drafted for the Carus Lectures, making an otherwise fragmented set of materials more intelligible while also drawing attention to what Dewey chose not to publish in Experience and Nature, of which these lectures serve as the original basis. It argues that processes of familiarization – meant as a tensive, dynamic, and complex field of experience – are central to these pages and, more broadly, to Dewey’s account of perception.
