Elementi modernisti in "Aracoeli" di Elsa Morante

Starting from an analysis of the plot, characters, themes, and narrative structures of Aracoeli (1982), Elsa Morante’s (1912-1985) last novel, this article shows how the originality of the book can be understood and appreciated by considering the ways in which it embodies some typical features of the modernist novel. Abandoning the realist dominant of her previous novel, History: A Novel (La Storia), in Aracoeli Morante reconnects with the most innovative experiences of twentieth-century European fiction, creating a work of great complexity and difficult readability, yet endowed with a vertiginous thematic depth and shaped in a form that is, in many respects, experimental.
