Medieval law, a melting pot of diverse civilizations and traditions, was not limited to Statute Law and punishment. The community exercised its power of control through unwritten norms rooted in custom. Shame, a uniquely human emotion, played a more significant role than guilt. Drawing on the accounts of chroniclers and jurists, we will seek to explore a deep-seated mindset that extends, in a subtle way, into the modern world. The focus will be set on adultery.
