This study departs from the traditional reading of Cinema e pubblico as a book of sociology of film. On the contrary, it demonstrates that it is also an important critical essay, conducted in accordance with the author’s taste, well aware of the aesthetic values at stake. From this perspective, Spinazzola's originality lies not only in having studied seriously films that appeal to audiences, but not to critics. Rather, it lies in his equally thorough investigation of films that audiences dislike, even when they should. Among them, the films directed by Rossellini stand out, the director Spinazzola reserves the most laudatory judgments, despite the lack of success starting from Germany Year Zero.
