La costruzione geografica dell’Italia dal Risorgimento alla prima espansione coloniale

The Geographical Construction of Italy from the Risorgimento to the Early Colonial Expansion This article examines the contribution of cartography and the geographical sciences to the political process of constructing Italy, from the period of the Risorgimento to the First World War. The discussion is situated within a body of scholarship that, over the past three decades, has investigated the relationship between nation-building, colonialism, and cartographic representation, interpreting the map as a foundational device in the definition and consolidation of the modern state. In the Italian case, the role of cartography evolved from a privileged instrument addressed to the political elites who, during the Risorgimento, shaped the very idea of the nation, to assume after Unification a broader function of mass education through schooling and propaganda.

L’articolo analizza il contributo della cartografia e delle scienze geografiche al processo politico di costruzione dell’Italia, dall’epoca del Risorgimento alla Prima guerra mondiale. La riflessione si situa nell’ambito degli studi che negli ultimi tre decenni hanno indagato la relazione fra nation building, colonialismo e immagine cartografica, interpretando la carta come un dispositivo fondante nella definizione e nel consolidamento dello Stato moderno. Nel caso italiano, il ruolo della carta evolve da strumento privilegiato rivolto alle élite politiche che nel corso del Risorgimento plasmarono l’idea di nazione per assumere dopo l’Unità un ruolo educativo di massa attraverso l’educazione scolastica e la propaganda.
