Subcorneal hematoma in superficial epidermolytic ichthyosis mimicking a melanocytic pigmented lesion

A 22-year-old woman affected by superficial epidermolytic ichthyosis (SEI) referred to the Outpatient Consultation for Rare Diseases of the Department of Dermatology of the University of Bologna for a routine six-monthly follow up. Our attention focused on a brownish macule located on her left arm, not previously reported at earlier controls (figure 1). Immersion fluid dermoscopy and cross-polarized dermoscopy showed a prominent, darkly pigmented and broken-up irregular network, suggesting the diagnosis of pigmented skin lesion. The main initial differential diagnoses considered were ink spot lentigo [1] and malignant melanoma. However a more
