This paper aims to shed some light on the teaching tradition of the preliminary exercises (progymnasmata) in the Latin part of the Empire: through an analysis of the extant evidence, I shall seek to determine why, not- withstanding the importance of this step in the school curriculum of the Imperial age, only a small number of (mostly fragmentary) Latin handbooks have been transmitted to us.
