Starting with a look at the sometimes confusing way in which the 'Pillars of Hercules' are represented in the modern Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia (German, English, French and Italian versions), the article tries to show how the notion of these 'Pillars' developed in early Greek literature, where they were located (first in Classical and then in Later Antiquity), what metaphorical significance they acquired (already in Pindar), and how they lived on beyond Antiquity, in the poetry of Dante and in the age of Christopher Columbus.

Abstract
Starting with a look at the sometimes confusing way in which the 'Pillars of Hercules' are represented in the modern Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia (German, English, French and Italian versions), the article tries to show how the notion of these 'Pillars' developed in early Greek literature, where they were located (first in Classical and then in Later Antiquity), what metaphorical significance they acquired (already in Pindar), and how they lived on beyond Antiquity, in the poetry of Dante and in the age of Christopher Columbus.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
