How to overcome language and communication barriers in multilingual healthcare settings remains an unresolved societal issue, given the logistical difficulties in organizing appropriate interpretation and translation services to meet communication needs in different languages and language varieties. This paper aims to outline and explore alternative ways of organizing multilingual healthcare services made possible by recent technological advances, focusing on easily accessible healthcare content in a large number of national languages, the use of AI-assisted translation and interpretation applications, and content generation tools. In particular, the opportunities and risks associated with the use of AI-based tools will be critically examined, as well as the possibilities offered for creating safe and reliable multilingual health communication.
