During a survey conducted in the western part of the island of Lemnos in the summer of 2024, an inscription previously unknown to the scholarly tradition on Lemnos was discovered. Reused in a modern chapel near the locality of Portianou and paleographically datable to the 9th-10th c. AD, the inscription takes the form of an apotropaic formula intended to ward off the evil eye. It testifies to the fact that, much like in Late Antiquity, phthonos was still conceived in the Middle Byzantine period as a malevolent force, against which the protection of Christian powers was invoked.

Abstract
During a survey conducted in the western part of the island of Lemnos in the summer of 2024, an inscription previously unknown to the scholarly tradition on Lemnos was discovered. Reused in a modern chapel near the locality of Portianou and paleographically datable to the 9th-10th c. AD, the inscription takes the form of an apotropaic formula intended to ward off the evil eye. It testifies to the fact that, much like in Late Antiquity, phthonos was still conceived in the Middle Byzantine period as a malevolent force, against which the protection of Christian powers was invoked.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
