This essay re-examines the attribution of a long-forgotten work by Domenico Pieratti: the Crucifix inside the Cappellone degli Spagnoli of Santa Maria Novella in Florence. It is examined in relation to its closest known precedent, the marble Crucifix executed by Valerio Cioli for the Santaseverina Chapel in San Giovanni in Laterano, which can now be certainly attributed to the older artist in light of the signature identified during this research. Based on Pieratti’s Florentine Crucifix, the essay also proposes the attribution to Domenico and his brother Giovanni Battista of two other sculptures in Tuscany—one in wood and the other in papier-mâché.
