A poetess “deeply studious of ancient histories” : Camilla Scarampi, translator of Seneca tragicus · Camilla Scarampi (c. 1475-c. 1540) was a poet active at the Sforza court, best known for her vernacular verse. However, thanks to a recent discovery by Nathaël Istasse, we now know that she was also a translator, as she authored a vernacular verse translation of Seneca’s Hercules Furens, completed by 1524 and preserved exclusively in manuscript iv 1197 at the Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique. This paper studies Scarampi in the role of learned scholar and translator, and investigates the editions and commentaries she may have consulted for her work on the Senecan text.
