This article discusses the economic principles that connect work and education programs in prison with the rehabilitation of convicts, and analyses how the different organisation of these programs in different European countries and in the Unites States is reflected in different recidivism rates. The article also discusses important aspects of international economics and international political economy related to the treatment of prisoners that have not been adequately investigated and that therefore provide opportunities for future research.
