Territorial differences in Italian student achievement levels were proven to exist decades ago but have become only recently an important topic in the debate of education quality, in part due to the visibility of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) and the heightened responsibilities that have been conferred to regional administrations in the management of schooling processes. This article presents and discusses selected results from the 2009 edition of Pisa, with a special focus on regional differences which point to a marked North-South imbalance as well as significant differences within the country’s macro-areas. Selected factors potentially influencing these territorial imbalances are also briefly discussed.

Abstract
Territorial differences in Italian student achievement levels were proven to exist decades ago but have become only recently an important topic in the debate of education quality, in part due to the visibility of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) and the heightened responsibilities that have been conferred to regional administrations in the management of schooling processes. This article presents and discusses selected results from the 2009 edition of Pisa, with a special focus on regional differences which point to a marked North-South imbalance as well as significant differences within the country’s macro-areas. Selected factors potentially influencing these territorial imbalances are also briefly discussed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
