This article takes into account the biblical paradigm of killing and healing in Clement of Alexandria, developing it through a specific case study: embryology. In both the Paedagogus and the Stromateis, embryology appears within the semantic sphere of healing (as a metaphor, in the whole Paedagogus, for the educative action of the Logos) and within that of killing (in relation to abortion, condemned as an act in itself in Paed. II 10,96,1, and recurring in the prohibition against eating aborted animals in Str. II 18,93–94, itself a reminiscence of Exod 23:19 and Deut 14:11).
