Abstract. In inst. 2.1.8-12 Quintilian provides his reader with some noteworthy information on the history of the progymnasmata, in order to prove that these exercises are rhetorical in nature and must therefore be taught by rhetoricians. This paper aims to clarify some interpretative doubts concerning this section of the work, through comparison with the similar account by Theon.
