This paper examines some connections between Orphic cosmological ideas, particularly the Cosmic Egg, and Greek alchemical traditions. Beginning with the seventh-century Byzantine alchemist Christianos, who systematically employed eggs as symbols for elemental quadripartition in his combinatorial analysis of alchemical procedures, this study traces how the Orphic Cosmic Egg – representing universal unity composed of four elements – possibly influenced other alchemical works. Analysis of alchemical texts, manuscript iconography, and a specific Orphic cosmogony – the one from the Clementine Homilies – reveals possible traces of connections between Orphic religious thought and early alchemical practices.

Abstract
This paper examines some connections between Orphic cosmological ideas, particularly the Cosmic Egg, and Greek alchemical traditions. Beginning with the seventh-century Byzantine alchemist Christianos, who systematically employed eggs as symbols for elemental quadripartition in his combinatorial analysis of alchemical procedures, this study traces how the Orphic Cosmic Egg – representing universal unity composed of four elements – possibly influenced other alchemical works. Analysis of alchemical texts, manuscript iconography, and a specific Orphic cosmogony – the one from the Clementine Homilies – reveals possible traces of connections between Orphic religious thought and early alchemical practices.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
