La questione di Cipro in un documento inedito: la commissione per il pagamento del tributo tra Venezia e il Cairo nel 1490

In 1489, the Venetian ambassador Pietro Diedo was sent to Cairo to negotiate with the sultan regarding the annexation of the Kingdom of Cyprus by the Republic of Venice. In 1426, the Mamluks had subdued the Lusignan kings, forcing them to pay an annual tribute. The condition set by Qāʾitbāy for Cyprus’s transfer was that Venice recognize the Sultanate’s suzerainty over the island and continue paying the tribute. It was also agreed that the Serenissima would settle two overdue payments owed by the Lusignans. Of the 16,000 ducats agreed upon, a portion corresponding to 10,000 ducats was paid on-site. As for the remaining 6,000, the Sultan requested that Venice pay this amount in the form of furs and textiles. The task of delivering these goods to Egypt was entrusted to Alvise de’ Piero, a ducal notary. This article examines the commission, hitherto unpublished, given to him by the Collegio, as well as the issue of tribute payment, which highlight the interest shown by Venetian governing councils in reaching a smooth resolution to formalize the annexation of the island

Nel 1489, l’ambasciatore veneziano Pietro Diedo fu inviato al Cairo per negoziare con il sultano Qāʾitbāy l’annessione del Regno di Cipro alla Repubblica di Venezia. Il sultano pose come condizione il riconoscimento della sovranità del Sultanato sull’isola e il mantenimento del tributo annuale versato dai re Lusignano. Venezia dovette anche saldare due rate arretrate del tributo: dei 16.000 ducati pattuiti, 10.000 ducati vennero pagati in loco; quanto ai rimanenti 6.000, il sultano li richiese da Venezia sotto forma di pellicce e tessuti. L’incarico di portare in Egitto tali beni venne affidato ad Alvise de’ Piero, notaio ducale. In questo articolo si illustra la commissione, sinora inedita, datagli dal Collegio e la relativa questione del pagamento del tributo, le quali mostrano l’interesse manifestato dai consigli di governo veneziani nel giungere senza complicazioni a una soluzione per ufficializzare l’annessione dell’isola
