In the current global conjuncture, marked by protracted wars, genocides, authoritarian populism, imperialism, and renewed colonial ambitions, the production of antagonistic binaries appears particularly acute. From Gaza to Sudan to Ukraine, oppositional logics are repeatedly mobilised to legitimise military aggression and territorial expansion. Such processes of differentiation are far from neutral and are instead deeply entangled with hegemonic and ideological practices (Hall, 1985), involving the production and circulation of (contested) heritage and memory narratives.

Abstract

In the current global conjuncture, marked by protracted wars, genocides, authoritarian populism, imperialism, and renewed colonial ambitions, the production of antagonistic binaries appears particularly acute. From Gaza to Sudan to Ukraine, oppositional logics are repeatedly mobilised to legitimise military aggression and territorial expansion. Such processes of differentiation are far from neutral and are instead deeply entangled with hegemonic and ideological practices (Hall, 1985), involving the production and circulation of (contested) heritage and memory narratives.
