The paper focuses on the fundamental concepts of the restorative justice paradigm, comparing it with traditional approaches to justice, underlining its specificity and presenting it as an innovative model for interpreting and implementing, on a legal and social level, conflict and situations of crime or violation of rights. Since the 1990s, Italy has experienced significant practical experiments with these different kinds of practices, although not always easily identifiable and classifiable. Thus, in 2022 the Italian Legislator approved the d.lgs. n. 150, introducing an important reform of the justice system that led to a «comprehensive framework», allowing for the more stable and continuous implementation of restorative justice practices already known in the juvenile and adult criminal justice system. Nevertheless, this change has inevitably brought with it both lights and shadows. Finally, it should be noted that today it is increasingly necessary to talk about a restorative «culture», understood as an interpretative approach to social relations and the management of conflicts that arise at the community level in different contexts, encouraging dialogue and a fruitful exchange between approaches to care, support, and harm repair.
