The ability to understand one another not only through words but also through emotions can be considered an important goal of face-to-face communication. However, achieving this in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural contexts is not straightforward. While basic emotions such as joy, anger, sadness, and happiness are shared universally, the ways in which they are expressed differ across cultures. Cultural differences in emotional expression may lead to misunderstandings or discomfort in intercultural communication and may also constitute a challenge in second language acquisition. When learners are immersed in a target culture whose modes of emotional expression differ significantly from those of their native culture, how do they adapt? From the perspective of intercultural adaptation, this study addresses this question through an acoustic analysis of emotional speech produced by advanced learners of Japanese whose first language is Italian.

Abstract
