Quanti oracoli per i fondatori di Gela? (P-W 3 e 410)

Ancient narratives on the foundation of Gela include three oracles. The first one (P-W 3) is quoted by Diodoros and mentions two oikists, Antiphemos and Entimos, as well as two groups of settlers, one from Rhodes and one from Crete. This oracle shows great affinity with the description of the same event found in the so-called Sikelika in Thucydides’ book 6. The second one (not in P-W) probably belonged to the same tradition as the first one. This tradition would then be a Western Greek one and possibly an epichoric one. On the other hand, the third oracle (P-W 410) belongs to a different oracle story, one according to which Antiphemos was the brother of Lakios, the founder of Phaselis. This is a late Classical or early Hellenistic tradition which most probably originated in Rhodes.

Le narrazioni antiche sulla fondazione di Gela includono tre oracoli. Il primo (P-W 3), tràdito da Diodoro, vede la compresenza di due ecisti, Antifemo ed Entimo, e di due gruppi di coloni, da Rodi e da Creta, e presenta una grande affinità con la narrazione delle stesse vicende nell’archeologia siciliana di Tucidide. Il secondo (non inserito in P-W) apparteneva probabilmente alla stessa tradizione, che risalirebbe ad autori occidentali e potrebbe avere un’origine locale. Al contrario, il terzo oracolo (P-W 410) risulta pertinente a una diversa tradizione oracolare, che fa di Antifemo il fratello di Lacio, il fondatore di Faselide. Si tratta di una tradizione probabilmente tardo-classica o proto-ellenistica il cui luogo di origine è da ricercare a Rodi.
