This article begins by reviewing several scholarly hypotheses concerning possible conceptual connections between Vatican II, Ernesto Buonaiuti, and Catholic modernism, while also offering some critical reflections. It then analyzes Buonaiuti’s concept of the church, concluding with a focus on the sources that illuminate the crucial final phase of his life – when he chose to leave the Catholic Church and advocated for a «new ecumenical Christian Church».
