Implementing innovative community mental health care: the pilot of Joint Action ImpleMENTAL project in Lombardy Region (Italy - 2024) Introduction The ImpleMENTAL Joint Action (JA) was an EU-funded project aimed at implementing best practices in mental health at community level. The project’s core was to implement these best practices in a structured way across all participating countries using a common set of implementation tools and plans. Lombardy Region, in Italy, and Germany managed the WP5 technical work package, which focused on developing best practices in community-based mental health services. Within this project, the Lombardy Region aimed to improve the quality of mental healthcare for young patients with borderline personality disorders by delivering evidencebased psychosocial treatments. The aim of this work is to describe the tools used and the results obtained during the implementation process promoted by JA within the Lombardy Region's pilot project. Materials and methods A common set of tools was used to provide participating countries with a structured model for implementing the selected best practices. The tools employed throughout the different phases of the process, including pre-implementation, implementation, evaluation and sustainability are described in the paper. Results Eighteen of Lombardy’s 27 Local Health Units participated in the initiative, enrolling 309 young patients. The initiative resulted in an increased delivery of evidence-based interventions and collaborative therapeutic plans, as well as the assignment of case managers and improved interaction with social services. It also strengthened partnerships with family associations. Conclusions and discussion JA emphasised the necessity of structured implementation processes, comprehensive training, motivated professionals, information systems for monitoring and regional clinical pathways, all of which are vital for reducing local variability. These elements were pivotal in achieving sustainability and advancing recoveryfocused mental healthcare. Key words: community-based mental health services; implementation; borderline personality disorders
