In this paper a numerical analysis of the performance of silicon DC open channel Electro-Osmotic Pumps (EOP) is presented. The investigation covers micro and nano channels with different cross-section geometries, focusing in particular on the rectangular and trapezoidal ones. Numerical results have been used in order to show in which conditions a silicon EOP with rectangular or trapezoidal channels can be studied by approximating the 2D cross-section with a parallel plate configuration. This study has highlighted the effect of the confining solid walls and of the channel aspect ratio on the distribution of the electric potential over the channel cross-section and on the velocity field generated by the DC EOP for a broad range of operative conditions. With the aim of giving a useful tool to the EOP designers, two user-friendly correlations have been developed in order to draw the characteristic curve (volumetric flow rate vs. pressure head) of a silicon open channel EOP. These correlations work with both rectangular and trapezoidal geometries in the whole range of the operative conditions analyzed.
